Overview

The Lenzing Group is a multinational that produce wood-based fibers such as visco and modal. For many years, their products play essential role in the textile industry.

Lenzing’s Asian office need to hold a large-scale ceremony for their latest launched product, Tencel™ Model Fiber. With the company’s value on environmental sustainability, they decides to go paperless for the ceremony and let guests access all the information online.

In this project, I designed the mobile experience for the ceremony by organizing information of event locations, schedule, products, and company detail etc., with proper deliverable method.

Project type: Internship work

Duration: 8 weeks

Scope: User Experience Design

               User Research

               User Interface Design

Background

When attending public events, we usually see staff pass on handouts at the front gate.

These handouts usually includes key information of the event such as location, time, and brief introduction.

However, we are often aware of these informations before coming to the event.

Besides that, physical handout has other limitations due to form and size...

We are always limited to the length and content to create a handout...

Yes, I had to scan a few QR code  on the handout to access the online resources.

It’s hard to integrate all the online resources on a physical guide. ”

Because people don’t want to read loads of paragraph.

Limitation of Physical Handout

To make the handout of this ceremony not only help the host promote activity and products, but also help the guests keep updated before, during, and after the event, the idea of creating a digital handout came out.

Priority of different features

Two rounds of user interview made me aware that guests and host have different demands. To clarify the design hierarchy and balance hosts’ and guests’ need, I listed 10 functions and asked participants to rate their level of importance from 1 to 10(1 means the least important, and 10 means the most important), then counted the average score and ranked. After calculating the average score of each function, I ranked them in 3 levels of priority.

Information Architecture

Based on previous research result and design objectives, I created the basic information architecture and structured 6 main sections ,including access to the schedule, location navigation, cloud album, about the company, company social media account, and live stream.

Design Scenario

Based on previous research result and design objectives, I created the basic information architecture and structured 6 main sections ,including access to the schedule, location navigation, cloud album, about the company, company social media account, and live stream.

Lo-fi Prototype

I created multiple design drafts and clickable prototype to get early feedback from the Lenzing team.Besides, I tried different design solutions for major modules and tested them with users and made our decision.

Iteration of highlight design features will be displayed in the following pages.

How might we leverage the portability of mobile device to promote the product and deliver synchronous information to keep guests updated?

Design opportunity of the online handout

Highlights

“We want to take advantage on the digital version and linked guests to online resources that we want them to see, for example our social media account.”
-Lisa Lu, Director of Lenzing Nanjing

“As the representative of my company, I will need to attend this event by myself. A clear navigation to the specific event hall would be helpful”
-Brenda, Guest of the event

“I hope to get access of the photographs taken in the activity easily because I need to save my manager’s photos for future use. In the past events, although I saw photographers taking photos everywhere, I barely see where those pictures goes, or I need to ‘dig out’ my manager’s photos from more than 10,000 photos.”
-Tina, secretary of guest company’s manager

Summary of needs

If I transform the handout online, what I need to keep and revise? I initiate another round of interview:

Two main painpoints

“Due to the page limitation, we cannot include much content, otherwise people will be tired of looking at long paragraph of text. Also because we can only hand in physical handout during the event, its influence is limited to the specific participants and time.”
-Lisa Lu, Director of Lenzing Nanjing

“A shortage is that it’s hard to integrate different resources together, such as our company’s official website, product’s promotional page, social media accout etc. Therefore, it’s hard to promote out products.”
-Alice Wang, Secretary of Lenzing

“Handouts help us access to important informations, such as host info, location, and schedule. I can double-check those informations during the event to see what’s going on.”

-James, Guest of the event

Feedback to existed physical handout

Interview Topic: What functions users value, and what limitations of the physical handout bother them?

Participants: 6 (3 employee of the Lenzing Group, 3 guests of the ceremony)

Understand the User

Design Objectives

Based on the findings I got in the user research, I summarized the objectives for the design as the following two parts:

  • List key informations in logic and clear manner

  • Show step-by-step instruction for navigation

  • Set up cloud file to keep participants updated

  • Highlight access to the official social media account

  • Set up live stream to interact with more people

  • Integrate diverse resources of the product and company
